Ok though, you guys are taking things out of the context of the show though—

Doctor Who has been a HUGE proponent of “you should treat people like people”.  They have PoC heroes and heroines, strong females, gay and lesbian characters who aren’t stereotypes—etc.  

Two things: I think the writer is trying to drive home that point, here.  Yeah, it can be seen as colour blindness, but it can also be seen as an attempt to startle people into thinking about preconceptions.  It was done with less finesse than I would like, but given the tenor of the show, I honestly believe it was done with good intent.

Second of all: THE DOCTOR IS NOT HUMAN.  And he hasn’t lived all of human history.  What we’re seeing here is one of those empty spots in his experience—it would never occur to him that someone would treat Martha as anything less than she is, because that concept is completely alien to him.

doesn’t this kind of go back to the argument of including PoC in movies like Brave with semi-historical (but obviously still magical) settings? basically, that PoC were not only living in Europe for quite some time before the modern era, but that they were doing so as merchants and such, not just slaves. on the one hand, the doctor being “colorblind” and that being played off as a good thing is problematic. but on the other, maybe this could be referencing the fact that our historical education often cuts PoC out of the picture in western countries or else relegates them only to slave or servant roles? maybe that’s giving Doctor Who too much credit though.
