Pixar: We didn’t want to make a movie with POC as the main characters so we thought we’d just rehash cars but this time with planes. You see making movies about inanimate objects is easier than writing a movie for POC children.
actually, Pixar isn’t making Planes. Disneytoon Studios is. in fact, i don’t think Pixar even wanted anything more to happen with Cars than the original movie, but since Disney owns them, it’s been Disney pushing for more since it’s easy merchandising that can be directed at boys (since Disney’s got plenty directed at girls).
i’m not saying that Pixar’s lack of main POC characters is excusable, but please note that Planes is not going to have the Pixar name on it. Walt Disney Animation, Pixar, and Disneytoon Studios are all separate studios, even though they are all owned by the Walt Disney Company.

Merida: I’m not going to be like you!
Elinor: You’re acting like a child.
Merida: And you’re a beast! That’s what you are!
that moment at the end where Elinor throws the bow in the fire and a split second later breaks down asking herself what she’s done….god, i’ve felt that. that’s the worst feeling. it’s like you wake up from your own anger and just hate yourself and cry and oh god, it’s the worst feeling. that moment is why Elinor is my favorite character in the movie.

i loved it. absolutely and completely. i love that it was a fairy tale and i loved the characters and i loved the colors and settings and costumes and animation and i really enjoyed it. and i will admit that my cheeks were completely soaked with tears at the end of it, which i didn’t expect. but like, that’s me. i once cried at the end of The Little Mermaid.
anyway, i found it really enjoyable. i know it’s been getting some strangely mixed reviews, but i suspect those come from people that have some sort of construct in their heads about the types of stories Pixar should tell.
OH. and make sure to stay til the end past all the credits for a treat!
(and if any of my friends are planning a Merida cosplay you should tell me right now because Queen Elinor could totally be added to my cosplay list. DEM SLEEVES.)
