This cosplay has been sitting in a box forever, just waiting to be finished but I’ll probably never get around to it. The sleeves are still not attached to the body and there’s quite a bit that needs fixing (plus I’ve somehow lost weight so it is now baggy on me).
The design is based on Kelsey’s turret design. There’s even a little pouch behind the red spot that I was going to put LEDs in eventually.
I doubt I’ll ever finish it and even if I did, I doubt I’d be confident enough to wear it at a con.
So, I’m thinking about maybe selling it as an unfinished cosplay… Would anyone be interested in that???
WHOA HEY THAT’S PRETTY SWEET. you should keep it and come do a portal group with me and meg so that i can have a turret army. c8<
Homemade Frankenturret by Daniel / Corroder666
The thankfully short-lived Wheatley Laboratories produced many scientific abominations. The Frankenturret, a wretched mashed-together hybrid of the Aperture Science Sentry Turret and the Weighted Storage Cube, was only ever capable of pathetically hopping if placed upright and were quickly discontinued after their creator, Wheatley, was ported into space. DA user Corroder666 made one from scratch, however, complete with glow-y eyes and twitching legs. His goal was to have them walk on their own, but much like the real things, they proved totally inept at even the simplest science. You can read more info about the build (in german) at here, or check out the video below to see it in testing mode:

breaking news: i was all wrong about the size of wheatley holy cow
was i the only one that got the impression that he was like half that size??
If I remember correctly, the sizing in noclip mode isn’t accurate. Something about how they enlarged everything so it looks the correct proportion from first person perspective?
I’m pretty sure he’s considerably smaller than that, somewhere between a basketball and a beach ball, I think.
yeah dude, the sizing of this isn’t right at all. go compare potato glados to chell, and you’ll see how totally off it is. the proportions are all wonky because of how the engine is programmed for first person.
This has to do with the first person camera’s field of view (FOV). Generally it’s set anywhere from 60-90 degrees (sometimes higher). I think Portal 2 had a 90degree FOV, I’m not sure though.
If everything was to be made accurate to world scale then you would see everything as being really small due to that FOV being so high. I have a friend who would do this and it always made everything feel weird when running around in the game. It just means the game objects should be larger.
Also a kind of funny rule of thumb that I and other people who make games follow is to treat the player as if they are drunk or dizzy or something and give them lots of room, which means make things larger. Because everyone has trouble moving around will bump into everything when trying to control a character in game. (Unless it’s a horror game, then you get no room)
If you’re interested, here’s a link to a video that goes into the mathematics behind game cameras and their FOV and stuff. It’s a two parter
oh look my bf is being super smart and amazing and game designy for you all <3

always found it interesting how different they look in the same chassis;;
i love how they knocked off parts of it specifically for Wheatley. also, the cobra-like animation on him was just brilliant. god, i love this game.

On a final note before I go to bed, it really is depressing me the number of people saying that putting Chell on the box would be an empty gesture since she’s nothing more than a player avatar devoid of characterization.
Except she’s not? She has a name, she has a face, she has some very definite traits. If you don’t have a voice, you don’t matter?
firstly, we really DON’T know very much about chell. we know what she looks like. we know she doesn’t speak, but we don’t know for sure if that’s by choice or because she flat out can’t speak. and we know that she’s tenacious enough to be marked as not good for testing. that’s it, really. everything else is speculation. but that’s a good thing.
the “silent protagonist” is a gaming thing. lot of games, especially first-person games, have the player character just not talk a very much, if at all. the best you get are little snippets of conversation where you can choose from 2 or 3 pre-defined options. and the reason a lot of games choose to do so little of hearing your own character is that they’re afraid it’ll bring you out of the game. they want you fully immersed, but if your character automatically does or says something you wouldn’t do it breaks the immersion. basically, the player is the character. so the traits we find in chell, specifically her tenacity, are traits to be found in most gamers. everything else is up to you to fill in. valve is awesome with this because they choose to use it, to own their silent protagonist and make their silence apart of the story. they do it in half-life too.
and since this happens so often in games, especially other valve titles, it really does make a poor excuse for not putting chell on the cover of the game.
i may have started playing the sims again and i may have decided to make some of my favorite aperture buddies.
